Stair Runner FAQs
How wide should a stair runner be?
Most Tunbridge Wells homes suit a runner between 60cm and 80cm wide, with 5cm to 10cm of bare tread showing each side. The proportion matters more than the exact figure, so we measure the staircase and recommend a width to suit it.
Can a runner be fitted on a turning Victorian staircase?
Yes. The angled winder steps are cut on the angle so the border stays even both sides. Having seen plenty of the town’s period staircases helps, and we assess before quoting so nothing surprises you on the day.
Is a runner better than fully carpeting?
For a great many Tunbridge Wells homes, yes. The period staircases tend to have good timber that looks better on show at the edges, and a runner is far easier and cheaper to replace when the centre wears.
Do I need an underlay?
It is worth having. Underlay softens each step, cuts the noise through the house and absorbs impact that would otherwise hit the pile directly, adding real life to the runner.
