Stair Runners in Southborough

Victorian staircases weren’t designed to be fully carpeted. The proportions are wrong for it, the wide treads, the exposed balustrades, the way the light falls on the wood at the edges. A runner works with the staircase rather than covering it up, and in a lot of Southborough homes, it’s the better choice from the moment you see it laid.
Silverdale Flooring supplies and fits stair runners across Southborough and the surrounding TN4 area. The Tunbridge Wells showroom is on Silverdale Road, less than ten minutes away. If you’d rather not make the trip, someone from the team will come to you instead.

What Makes a Good Stair Runner

Getting the material right

Stairs take concentrated punishment. Every step lands in roughly the same spot on every tread, which means the pile breaks down faster than it would in a room where foot traffic spreads across a wider area. Wool and wool-rich blends hold up best. They spring back, keep their appearance longer, and feel solid underfoot in a way that cheaper fibres don’t.
Silverdale stocks runners from brands including Brintons, Cormar, Axminster, Westex, Penthouse, and Victoria Carpets. The range covers most budgets. If you’re not sure what will actually last on your stairs, the team will give you a straight answer rather than pointing you towards the most expensive option on the shelf.

How it gets fitted

A poorly fitted runner moves. It lifts at the edges, shifts underfoot, and wears unevenly, usually within a year. Silverdale uses its own fitters rather than subcontractors, which matters more than it might sound. They’ve worked on straight runs, curved staircases, and winder treads, and they’ll tell you upfront if your staircase needs anything unusual before the job starts.
Stair rods give a traditional look and keep the runner removable. Gripper rods are the cleaner, more permanent fix. Both work well; it comes down to the staircase and the finished result you want.

Samples in Your Home, Not Just in the Showroom

Carpet looks different in a showroom than it does on your own stairs. The light, surroundings, and scale are completely different. Most people find that the colour they were certain about in the showroom looks slightly off once they get home and hold it against the wall.

Silverdale will come to you. Someone from the team brings samples to your home, measures the staircase, and talks you through the options in the actual space where the runner will go. There’s no pressure to decide on the day. If you want to sit with the samples for a week, that’s fine.

Stair Runner FAQs

How wide should a stair runner be?

It depends on the staircase. Most domestic stairs suit a runner between 60cm and 80cm wide, leaving a border of exposed tread on each side, usually between 5cm and 10cm wide. The proportions matter more than the exact measurement. Silverdale will measure your staircase and recommend a width that looks right for your specific staircase, rather than giving you a generic answer.

My stairs have winder treads at the bottom. Can a runner still be fitted?

Yes. Winder treads, the angled steps that turn a corner, need the carpet cut at an angle to keep the border consistent on each side. It’s more involved than a straight run and needs someone who’s done it before. The team will assess the staircase before quoting to avoid any surprises on the day.

Is a stair runner better than fully carpeting the stairs?

For many Southborough homes, yes. Period staircases with good timber treads often look better with the wood visible at the edges. A runner is also easier to replace when the centre wears out, without having to redo the whole staircase. That said, it comes down to the staircase and the look you want; the team will give you an honest view when they visit.

Do I need an underlay?

It’s worth having. Underlay softens each step, reduces noise, and takes some of the impact that would otherwise go straight into the carpet pile. It noticeably extends the runner’s life. Silverdale will advise on the right thickness for the carpet you choose.
